FUEL OIL

Fuel oil is the heavier fraction of the crude oil that remains after the extraction of the higher valued distillates. Broadly speaking, fuel oil is any liquid petroleum product that is burned in a furnace or boiler for the generation of heat or used in an engine for the generation of power. Some of the common use in Malaysia are in industries for process heating, steam generation and power generation, and as bunker fuel for marine vessels.

Similar to Diesel, fuel oil is also commonly stored in skid tanks. For safety purpose, it is also a recommended that storage tanks are to be bunded so that spills could be controlled and recovered. The capacity of bunding will be at least 110% volume of the largest storage tank.

The most common fuel oil available in Malaysia are Light Fuel Oil (LFO) 80 CST and Medium Fuel Oil (MFO) 180 CST. The main difference between both products is the viscosity, where for LFO it is at a maximum 80 centistokes, and for MFO 180 centistokes. The higher the viscosity, the thicker is the oil. The sulphur content for both products are at a maximum 3.5%.
